Inauguration of the new Emergency Department at the Korgialenio-Benakeio General Hospital Hellenic Red Cross<\/p>\n
The Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis visited today, Thursday, January 15, 2026, the Athens General Hospital Korgialenio-Benakeio Hellenic Red Cross to attend the inauguration of the new Emergency Department (ED). The event was attended by the Deputy Minister of Health Marios Themistokleous, the Director of the 1st Emergency Department Olga Balaoura, the Hospital Governor Anastasios Karandreas and the President of the Hellenic Red Cross Antonis Avgerinos. The President of the Hospital Employees’ Union Voula Georgaki and the President of POEDIN Michalis Giannakos were also present.<\/p>\n
The renovation, restructuring and upgrading works of the Emergency Department, amounting to 2,079,584.50 euros, concern the formation of a Reception Secretariat, a Patient Triage Area, a Resuscitation Room, Uniform Examination Rooms, an Ophthalmology Clinic and an ENT Clinic, a Nurses’ Station, a Specialist Clinic, a Waiting Area for Patient Stretchers as well as a Trauma Station – EKAB – Stretcher Positions.<\/p>\n
The Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, stated:<\/p>\n
“Today is a day of joy for the Korgialenio – Benakeio Hospital and for the National Health System in general. I would like to thank the former Administrator of the Hospital, Mrs. Tavianatou, and the current Administrator, Mr. Karandreas, for the very good work they have done in this hospital. Mr. Themistokleous and I have a blessing as Ministers. Our term of office coincided with the resources of the Recovery Fund, which are unprecedented resources for the National Health System. Many may blame Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the Government, but in reality, no government since the transition has provided so many resources for the National Health System. The fact that we were given these resources did not automatically mean that these projects would be carried out. This is a constantly difficult task, a gamble that was not at all certain that we would succeed. When the resources from the Recovery Fund run out, we will have a new National Health System. This hospital is a historic hospital. A hospital of volunteerism, contribution and humanity. And this hospital could not exist without our collaboration with the Hellenic Red Cross. I admire the workers in the emergency departments of hospitals, it is one of the most difficult jobs. There are moments on duty that are reminiscent of a real battle. And that is why those who work in the Emergency Departments are worthy of admiration. I pledge that as long as I hold this office, I will work tirelessly to make the lives of these workers better.\u201d<\/p>\n
Deputy Minister of Health Marios Themistocleous stated:<\/p>\n
\u201cToday we are inaugurating another emblematic project of the new National Health System. These are the new, state-of-the-art Emergency Departments of the \u201cKorgialenio \u2013 Benakeio Hospital\u201d Red Cross, a historic hospital whose infrastructure had not been renovated in the slightest for decades. This is another example of the correct and timely use of the Recovery Fund\u2019s money. We continue, with a plan and vision, the implementation of our program in Health, for a new NHS, which will operate digitally, which will be housed in ultra-modern spaces, which will be staffed by even more staff and which will be centered on the patient. This is the NHS of the new era, which is not structured with announcements, but with projects that we deliver and operate\u201d.<\/p>\n
The President of the Employees\u2019 Union, Voula Georgaki, stated:<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to thank my colleagues above all. It is a chain. Without the dynamic staff and my colleagues, the hospital would not be able to operate. This hospital is an emblematic hospital and for this reason it should be given the value it deserves, because approximately 1,200 cases come to us every shift. We are fighting, we are fighting, not everything is good. We also thank the political leadership for what it has done so far. But we are looking forward to future projects. We will be here. We will be helpful. We love our hospital and I will say very objectively that we are perhaps the best hospital in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n
The President of POEDIN, Michalis Giannakos, stated:<\/p>\n
\u201cWe, the public health workers, welcome the projects that are being carried out. Indeed, the National Health System has acquired state-of-the-art medical equipment. Projects are being carried out that are necessary and that make the life and work of the staff and patients easier. However, as the Minister knows, we need hands in order to be able to cope with the workload that exists. We hope that more incentives will be given to attract health personnel to the system, because indeed announcements are being made but there is no interest.
