Regeneration Study of the Eastern Trench of the Venetian Fortifications of the Old Town of Chania

Chania Chania

The renovation procedures of the Eastern Trench of the Venetian Fortifications of the Old Town of Chania are in progress.

The relevant study has already been included in the Operational Program “Crete 2014-2020”.

In particular, the complete study and the documents of the Public Procurement Declaration for the renovation of the Eastern Trench of the Venetian Fortifications of the Old Town of Chania will be prepared, with the aim of shaping it as a green, culture and leisure area and its functional, environmental, restoration and aesthetic with interventions of mild form and scale, and with respect to the historicity of the space.

The Eastern Trench today has an almost triangular shape. The base is about 63 meters wide in the south and the top in the north, while the length of the ditch is about 220 m and the middle is 45 m wide. It belongs to the Greek State, under the management responsibility of the Ministry of Culture and Sports. With the exception of the open-air theater, the rest of the space remains without specific use and as it has no shady spots, it is not used by the residents.

During the main tourist season, it is transformed into an illegal, improvised parking lot, completely losing the character of the public space and degrading the entire monument of the Venetian fortifications. In addition, along the wall and the vaulted duct there is native parasitic vegetation that despite regular cleaning germinates quickly, especially after rainfall, causing floods in the Eastern Trench.
